a collection of notes on areas of personal interest
When I began assembling these notes, they were intended for personal use. I did not intend to write much nor, as a consequence, did I feel the need to remember the sources used to assemble them. This is not at all professional and, a number of years further on, a decision I keenly regret. Due to the unstructured manner in which I look at the history of the Cassini and Maraldi families and their times, I am frequently at a loss to know where information came from.
So I am making a belated attempt to assemble some of the sources with the hope they might be of use to others and, of course, to me in my continuing interest in the families and related matters. Although this will consist mainly of written sources, I have also made visits to France and Italy, and spoken and corresponded with many individuals over a period of time. The multiplicity of sources makes individual references impractical.
The illustration above is a detail, hidden in Jean Dominique Cassini’s moon map, showing what is thought to be a portrait of his wife, Géneviève.
Regrettably this list will start with the most recent resources, and it may take me some time to rediscover where other information came from. My research and reading includes, but is not limited to the following…
